PUBLIC SPACE - ATRIUM
This nolli map plan shows the very initial development of the position of the public atrium. The atrium is a continuation of the public space.

The starting point of this project was the massing which came from the urban scheme. For the initial ideas I explored the massing further through the use of a massing model within context (see bellow). This was a good tool to resolve the placement of the circulation and the placement of the atrium space and the apartments.

The overall site plan and placement of the public square influenced the placement of the public atrium. From this, the placement of the retail stores was decided. See the diagram to the left which influenced this. This diagram was done before the idea of ‘breaking through the garden’ was introduced. The public square connection to the atrium was one of the key aspects of the design.

MASSING MODELS
A number of simple models slot in massing model of the envisioned area were made to test out spatial ideas.
SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE FLATS
Within this stage, the finer detail of the quality of the atrium space, the different levels used within it, and the circulation arrangement came about. Large balconies and positive circulation space was a priority from the beginning. The double story duplex design influenced the main staircase and allowed an unconventional arrangement of the staircase. Models were made to be able to work out the twisting arrangement of stairs. This saved space.

The ‘streets in the sky’ where resolved to push and pull out to create other uses for the area. This was developed in plan and an axonometric of the Regent Road facade. There would be private claims on the public space and this would hopefully allow for interaction and a sense of community to develop.

DESIGN PROPOSAL
What shaped this project the most was to make the continuation of the shared space into a large triple volume atrium which would contain a bookstore and the restaurant. The apartments would sit on top of this atrium space and look out onto Regent Road and the new garden on top of the parking garage. This new garden space also allowed the back of the atrium to open up and the apartments to have a nicer outlook for the north facing balconies. The public would also be able to access the roof space. This diagram summaries this spatial layout. From this diagram the finer details were able to be resolved.

This idea originated from Herman Hertzburger
Initial sketch of the atrium and the experience of the staircase coming down into the atrium.
This axo explored the public balconies and the smaller in-between space for the residents. The in-between space gives residents claim to private land.
